Desmond Tutu, the former Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, was one of the world’s most revered religious figures and a leading moral voice for peace and justice.
His teachings combined the theological concept that all human beings are shaped in the image of God with the traditional African spirit of Ubuntu, in which humanity achieves personhood only through other people. His deep faith and commitment to prayer, worship, and the life of the Spirit provided the foundation for his message of love and forgiveness.
It speaks about the freedom of God, and we created in the image of this God have the same freedom. That God made us as those who fundamentally would be moral, ethical beings who can choose. And you know… we can choose to love or not love God. We can choose to obey or not to obey God. And the fantastic thing is that God says, ‘I have such a profound reverence for your freedom that I’d much rather you went freely to hell than compel you to go to heaven.’ It’s a staggering thing. What it says about us.
